When he asked what his fellow prisoners had died of, he received the following response: “ Scheisserei, boils and pneumonia, most of them. In his diary, the Norwegian Odd Nansen recalled a conversation in Sachsenhausen in October 1943. Some illnesses, such as hunger edema, were caused by the poor living conditions in the camps and were very widespread. If they did get sick, it would take a long time to recover because of their vitamin deficiency, and wounds were very slow to heal. Their general weakness and malnourishment as well as the heavy physical labor they had to perform made the prisoners susceptible to disease in the camps. There were never enough beds, bandages or medications to treat all prisoners. The existence of sick bay cards should not disguise the fact that medical care in the concentration camps was catastrophic. Because paper was generally in short supply, they would cut the cards into smaller pieces and reuse them. Remarkably often, prisoner clerks would take sick bay cards that were no longer needed and use them for other card files. The sick bay cards additionally served a very different purpose in the camps. They also used the cards to decide whether or when a prisoner should be admitted to a particular station in the clinic. The responsible doctor would write illness reports and diagnoses on the card. Each time a prisoner visited the sick bay, they were given their card, which they had to present during the examination. Sick bay cards were also updated by the prisoner clerks if prisoners received additional medical treatment. Prisoner clerks noted the personal details and medical histories of the newcomers on the cards. The sick bay cards were created during the prisoner’s first medical examination. It is also difficult to say whether certain groups of prisoners were systematically excluded from medical examinations. We no longer know who decided which prisoners would receive sick bay cards and which would be listed in a medical treatment book. During this examination, the sick bay clerk would create a sick bay card for the prisoner, unless the prisoner’s details were entered in a medical treatment book instead. One of the last steps after a prisoner had arrived at a concentration camp was a medical examination by the camp doctor. Only the prisoner’s occupation was noted on the later sick bay card. The prisoners were no longer examined so that their medical history could be recorded, as they had been in earlier years. The information on these later cards is usually very brief. At this point, masses of prisoners were arriving from the abandoned concentration camps in the east. In the Buchenwald and Dachau concentration camps, for example, they were filled out even in the last months of the war. The sick bay cards, which come in different colors depending on whatever paper was currently available, were used until 1945. Several days could pass between the prisoner’s arrival and their first medical examination. The newcomers were either led directly to the sick bay, or they were taken there during the first few days of their imprisonment. Later on, it was more common for sick bay cards to be filled out when prisoners arrived at a concentration camp. In the first years after 1933, medical treatment books were kept in the concentration camps. The prisoner functionaries there – known as sick bay clerks – filled out sick bay cards, medical treatment forms and medical treatment books with information on the prisoners and their illnesses. The clinic was also known as the sick bay ( Revier) or, to be more precise, the prisoner sick bay ( Häftlingsrevier). But how a prisoner clinic was equipped and which departments actually existed varied among the concentration camps. In theory, there were outpatient and inpatient departments, tuberculosis departments, prisoner laboratories, eye clinics, dentists and recuperation rooms. It was not until 1939 that trained doctors who had come to the camp as prisoners were assigned to work in the clinic. These prisoners often did not have the necessary medical knowledge to perform this job. In this clinic, prisoners worked as medics and nurses under the leadership of SS doctors and the supervision of the sick bay kapo. The prisoner clinic was responsible for providing medical care to the prisoners in the concentration camp.

Getting back to the two bucket potty, without having pee in the poo bucket, the poo will dry out a lot faster. The pee can be safely dumped in your yard. I have instructions in my book Bug Out Gardening that advises you how to use urine as fertilizer. Sprinkle some more sawdust over the waste so it stays covered while composting further.īecause pee is sterile (with the exception of some cases such as if you have a kidney infection), a lot of people prefer to use separate buckets for pee and poo. The bucket full of sawdust and waste goes in a composting heap. When the bucket is full, you put the toilet seat on a new, clean bucket. Instead of digging a slit trench under it for a latrine you can put your bucket under that.Īfter each use, you put a bit of sawdust into the bucket. If you take two tree limbs (large enough branches or limbs to support your weight) and lash them between two trees (one limb in front of each other with the tree trunks supporting in middle) This will form you a platform to place your commercial toilet seat on. Let me paint you a mental picture of what else you can do. Failing that you can take the seat off your existing toilet but it will slide around. I advise you for your toiletry comfort, to put a specially-fitted toilet seat on top of the bucket. I am not advocating or suggesting that in any way but a simple compost toilet basically consists of a bucket which you do your business into. People in Asia and other countries have used human manure for centuries to increase crop yields. This material is good for absorbing liquids as is and there is a commercial made product called Poo-Pourri that you can spritz on it that should help reduce odors even better. One suggestion I have for you to consider is if you are the type of prepper that has the space for an extra 5-gallon bucket or has bought one of those premade 5-gallon buckets with a toilet seat is going by a local cabinet shop or wood mill and filling it with sawdust for free. For example, place the bags in the garage and inside the garbage can for disposal. Store the used bags away from kids, pets, and wildlife.Insert a new inner bag and add absorbent/odor reducer for the next use. Once the inner bag is full or you feel it needs to be replaced, tie it up. You may be able to use the same bag more than once before replacing. Down here in the deep South with have what we call red bugs, they are called chiggers up North, and those microscopic red spidery looking things can hide in that type of material quite easily as well as ticks and other creatures: you don’t need surprises from while sitting on the throne! I suppose you could steam that kind of organic material in a colander over a pot on a fire and then let it dry thoroughly overnight but that burns fuel and calories and would be tedious. You really don’t want to do that substitution, if you can help it. also, but let me add an insightful warning here. You can use dry leaves or pine straw, Spanish moss etc. Put some kitty litter, peat moss, lime, or something similar that will absorb liquid and help reduce odors into the inner bag.Line your toilet bowl (under the seat) with a plastic kitchen garbage bag inside another kitchen garbage bag.Flush out any water still in the bowl – the toilet shouldn’t refill.Turn the water valve to the toilet off.How To Modify A Conventional Commode Into An Off Grid Toilet Now the simplest and easiest method that I can offer you is nothing more than taking an empty garbage bag and lining your toilet bowl with it. However, there is always a chance that a grid down event like a natural disaster will cause you to revert to very basic sanitation measures so understanding emergency toilets is an important disaster preparedness consideration. Technology for off grid sanitation has come a long way from just digging a pit, and with the advent of various types of manufactured or homemade composting toilets becoming readily available, a homesteader has a lot of options to choose from and consider. When one thinks of off grid toilets, the classic backyard privy or outhouse comes to mind. They are one of the most effective ways that parents can develop their child’s math skills without lecturing or applying pressure. Kids learning games are the perfect way to reinforce and extend the skills children learn at school. All that parents must do is explain the rules of the game to their child and then start playing. They don’t have to worry about pushing or pressuring their children. Parents don’t have to be math geniuses to play a game. Kids learning games offer a pleasant way for parents to get involved in their children’s education.Math games for kids are focused on providing engaging activities to entertain strategic mathematical thinking Problem-solving is an essential skill in our professional, family, and social lives. Strategic thinking is a way to solve problems. It requires the ability to observe, gather information, plan and analyze possible solutions, and choose the appropriate action. Strategic thinking is one of the most important skills for children to develop. Math games help in building strategic thinking. Children whose parents show an interest in and enthusiasm for mathematics around the home will be more likely to develop that enthusiasm themselves. The enthusiasm also builds up if parents communicate the importance of mathematics to their children and become more involved in their children’s mathematical education. Parents’ attitudes toward mathematics have an impact on children’s attitudes. Appreciation and enjoyment of mathematics coupled with the task of nurturing children’s confidence in their ability to apply their mathematical knowledge to solve real-life problems is a challenge facing every parent today. More than that, mathematics is a subject that should be more enjoyable than it comes across as. Mathematics is a subject that is necessary for functioning adequately in society. 12/22/2023 0 Comments Hazel pdfpen ocrTime to give this device a real world test. No long USB cable because it’s wireless to both your computer AND your iOS or Android device. No giant power brick, in fact no power cord at all, instead it has an embedded rechargeable battery. It’s the size of a paper punch and only weighs 14 ounces. Before we start the review though, you hard Harmon say that the iX100 is $249, but it retails on Amazon for $179! Ok, now let’s review a few points about the iX100: This new iX100 portable scanner sounded pretty cool, so when they sent me a review unit I had to give it a try. Link to the video interview about the iX100 Let’s hear that interview and then I’ll explain. I have to admit, grout cleaning was still more fun.īut then while at CES, we interviewed Harmandeep Bola from ScanSnap and things changed. I had to clear a fair amount free space for the project and then I’d get to work. The S1300 scanner only weighs 3 pounds, but it comes with a lovely giant power brick and a REALLY long USB cable that I would drape across my desk. Technically I bought it for Steve, but then I stole it and kept it near my computer because I really was going to scan in all those darn documents sitting on top of the file cabinet. It lets you scan multiple pages at once, does duplex scanning (meaning it can scan both sides in one pass) and it’s pretty small. I caught the bug too and bought the Fujitsu Scansnap S1300. It did take off with a vengeance, at least in the tech podcasting community with the advent of the Fujitsu Scansnap scanners. In the old days we used flatbed scanners, which worked ok but the workflow was so slow with lifting the lid, flipping the page and pushing buttons that the whole idea of paperless didn’t really take off. Or maybe you’re like me, you bought a scanner and you do some scanning from time to time but mostly you look at that giant pile of paper and find an excuse to do something more interesting like clean the grout in the shower. Maybe you’re a high end paperless fanatic like Barry Porter, Jim Sewell, Georg Conant, Allister Jenks and George from Tulsa using Hazel rules and all kinds of other cool automation techniques to move your scans around. If you’re any kind of geek at all, you’ve probably jumped on the paperless bandwagon. 12/22/2023 0 Comments Bakery artrage complexThe recent 2017 Festival featured more than 700 events, 3,450 artists at 147 venues around the Perth metropolitan area. I have to update those filters from time to time, but not as often as I would have thought. Nextcloud is locked down for only family IPs. I looked at it and ran a server for a few weeks with some friends before deciding to switch to Nextcloud and Wormhole transfers. It has files, bulletin boards and a few custom abilities based on those 3. Most of these things aren't hard and don't need systems with much CPU/RAM. Whether it is an option or not depends on skills, 1 person's internet connection, the ability to remain patched, and desire to be secure. Amazon EC2 has a 1 yr free tier for a micro-instance that would run 1 of these things for a family. This stuff can be hosted for $5/month in almost any VPS provider too. It is amazing what a raspberry-pi can accomplish. I'm big on not using 3rd-party services, so take all this with that set of glasses. Last edited by Ralph L October 27th, 2020 at 11:21 PM. Update: My son got flowcrypt working on his windows chrome browser, so we are exchanging encrypted documents now. A next step will be to try to install it on chrome in my son's windows computer. In contrast, Mailvelope is supposed to work on a variety of mail servers. Still another problem with flowcrypt is that it works only on gmail. Also, Flowcrypt, while it can decrypt received pgp/mime email, cannot encrypt to this newer standard. However, Tbird/ enigmail has this same problem, so I guess I can't complain too much. One of my tests had 20 files in it, and dragging and dropping them one by one into my file system was certainly tedious. It has no way to bulk (batch) save multiple decrypted files to the users normal disk storage. There are some things I don't like about flowcrypt. I guess I'll just have to trust flowcrypt on this, since I know of no way to verify it. And flowcrypt must not forward the user's private keys to the gmail server. Judging from the dynamic status indicators it seems to do this. It must also download received email into the user computer before decrypting it. To do end to end encryption Flowcrypt, when originating email, must encrypt it on the user's computer before transmitting it to the gmail server. I also was successful in doing the reverse-sending encrypted and signed email (including multiple attachments) from Firefox/ flowcrypt and receiving and decrypting them in Tbird/ Enigmail.įlowcrypt claims end-to-end encryption and I tend to believe them (unlike Zoom, who it's rumored decrypts data in the Zoom server making it vulnerable to theft). I was successful in encrypting and signing messages (including multiple attachments) with Thunderbird (enigmail), sending them through my mediacom email server, and receiving and decrypting them on my gmail server using Firefox/ Flowcrypt. (I have not tried installing it on chrome yet.) I may also try mailvelope if I get a chance. I picked flowcrypt and installed as an add-on to Firefox. The two most promising browser add-ons for encryption, that I saw, were flowcrypt and mailvelope. I am making some progress on getting pgp encryption installed in a browser.
